With the top down and hands gripped on the steering wheel, a push of the button brings the roaring 2.0L engine to life. We were fortunate enough to be invited by Mazda to experience first hand the limited edition Mazda MX-5 RF. Driving through the winding roads of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, we were set to test out what this sports car could do.

Introducing the Limited Edition Mazda MX-5 RF (that’s Retractable Fastback); Mazda’s exclusive retractable hardtop MX-5. The traditional MX-5 is known for its lightweight, compact two-seater design with rear-wheel-drive and engine set well back in the bay. The MX-5 RF Limited Edition model boasts the well loved design with added features including BS wheels, Bilstein shocks and Brembo brakes allowing for a much smoother ride. There are only 110 Limited Edition models available in Australia. Each car is based on the MX-5 RF GT and equipped with the SKYACTIV-G 2.0L petrol engine. Topped off with a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission, this is a true sports car.

We journeyed out from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula in our white MX-5 RF, accompanied by lifestyle blogger Phoebe Phillips. We were impressed by the car’s sleek silhouette and the amount of power it produced given its size. The MX-5 RF is fitted with Recaro bucket seats hugging your body and making the ride feel like pure luxury. Did we mention the in-built seat warmers? It’s safe to say the drive was thoroughly enjoyable.

We reached our first destination at the prestigious Point Leo Estate, which is known as one of Mornington Peninsula’s most pristine locations. After enjoying some fine dining, we had worked up a thirst and ventured out with the team to Tussie Mussie Winery. The vineyard proved the perfect choice in more ways than one, providing our drinks and accomodation for the night.

Tussie Mussie Winery features a remarkable 27-acre private vineyard estate producing excellent wine tasting – we’re a sucker for a good Pinot Noir. If the wine tasting session and breathtaking scenery weren’t enough, Mazda had also kindly organised for an artistic print screening workshop with the oh-so-talented Kate Banazi. We found out painting with stencils is a lot harder than it looks and requires a lot of talent… We might just stick to driving cars.

The next day was a great opportunity to experience the MX-5 RF Limited Edition to the fullest with see its 13-second retractable folding top in action. The skies were clear, the sun was shining and the breeze blew through our hair. Unlike our experiences with other convertibles, the MX-5 RF felt incredibly steady and more grounded with the top down. En route to Port Phillip Bay, the compact Mazda MX-5 RF was an absolute pleasure to drive. Shifting gears proved to be so silky smooth, while manoeuvring was a breeze around winding roads that would make you go zoom zoom.

We’ve driven a few sports cars in our time, so the MX-5 RF had a hard challenge to impress. We were happily surprised with all the car’s additional features; making the drive feel that much more luxurious whilst keeping the sporty feel. With its comfort, stylish design and ease of driving, Mazda’s MX-5 RF definitely proves itself to be one of the best performance cars currently out on the market.
