After spending mere moments in the Lutetia Hotel, one can conclude that life is certainly better on the Left Bank. Steeped in history and styled with utmost elegance, this Parisian icon stole our hearts in the City of Love.

On approach to the Lutetia, the breathtaking stone facade immediately makes an impact. Reflecting the popular Art Nouveau style at the time of its inception, the commanding corner frontage is ornamented with intricate grape vine detailing for a truly stupendous sight. From the second you step foot in the lobby, service is superb with our luggage swiftly taken off our hands as we make our way to the check-in desk.

The interiors exemplify luxury and a considered vision by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. A successful fusion of classic and contemporary; the hotel’s tremendous revival highlights the best of the Lutetia’s past whilst utilising modern design elements and incorporating influences of Art Deco. Elegant references to the Lutetia’s rich heritage feature in every room, such as the hotel’s ship emblem encapsulated in an entranceway mosaic. Subtle nods to the luxury liner aesthetic echo throughout with polished wood walls and navy accents in the suites.

Lutetia, grand in every sense of the word, has a distinct atmosphere unlike any other establishment of its kind. There is a certain sense of inspiration and emotion emitting from each room which could only result from its illustrious past. The Lutetia has always been a hub for creatives across all disciplines. Regulars to the establishment included some of Paris’ more memorable characters such as Josephine Baker, the namesake of Lutetia’s sophisticated bar. In its modern setting, the Lutetia Hotel hosts a dedicated art gallery featuring the striking works of Fred Allard.

An important aspect of the hotel’s recent renovations is the clever injection of light into every space. From ingenious mirrored installations to an entire roof raised to reveal an open courtyard; no effort has been spared to ensure each area enjoys natural light. No more notable is this effect than in Le Saint-Germain restaurant which boasts a stunning glass ceiling featuring the colourful, contemporary artwork of Fabrice Hyber. As light filters through the quirky ceiling figures, a symphony of colours dance through the dining space creating a beautiful spectacle.

We are fortunate to dine at Le Saint-Germain and be served by some of the most knowledgeable, friendly yet professional wait staff we have ever encountered. We savour a selection of Champagne, red and white wines; all incredibly delectable and unique. Each course is prepared to perfection with dessert being a particular favourite (not an easy feat for someone who doesn’t normally have a sweet tooth).

As we retire to our room we are awestruck by the glittering Eiffel Tower light show seen from our two private balconies. Even whilst soaking in our indulgent Italian Calacatta marble bath we can catch a glimpse of the twinkling lights in the glass door’s reflection. The room’s décor exudes prestige with use of only the highest quality materials and a refined, masculine aesthetic. The palatial bed plays host to one of our most peaceful sleeps in recent memory with help from essential oils provided on our pillow and remote-controlled blockout curtains.

After enjoying an array of French delicacies for breakfast at L’Orangerie we eagerly prepare for our treatments at Akasha Spa. The Lutetia holds a careful focus on holistic wellness; offering a superior selection of treatments, beauty, fitness and nutrition programs. The tranquil, secluded Akasha Spa features a lavish lap pool, grandiose spa, sauna, steam room and dedicated treatment rooms where we receive masterful massages tailored to our specific needs.

Feeling relaxed and revitalised after our treatments, we choose to spend the rest of the day mulling over literature within the Lutetia’s stylish library. We come to learn the space is one of Paris’ best kept secrets that all visitors to Saint-Germain-des-Prés can savour, not just the hotel’s guests. Although the many sights and attractions of Paris are at the Lutetia’s doorstep, we found it impossible to tear ourselves away from this incredible institution.

The Lutetia left a lasting impression on us and a lingering desire to return as soon as possible. Although a voyage to Paris may not be scheduled for our near future, we can take solace knowing other establishments from The Set Hotels are not too far from home.
