Gili Trawangan has become one of our favourite summer spots in Indonesia. Located off the shores of Lombok, Gili T is known for its laid-back culture, excellent diving opportunities and friendly locals. Although the main streets are bustling with eager tourists, we found peace and quiet just off the main strip at Kelapa Villas.

The island can be reached from Bali or Nusa Lembongan by fast boat. As soon as you step foot on Gili T you feel like you’re in another world; there are no cars or scooters on the island, only bicycles and horse-drawn carts. Most of the roads on Gili T are still unpaved but once we arrived at Kelapa Villas we knew the bumpy ride was worth it.

Kelapa Villas offers a totally unique accommodation experience. Connecting a series of villas is a scenic walkway sprawling with beautiful bougainvillea flowers. Aptly named Lovers Lane this romantic walkway stretches far into the distance, indicating the luxurious proportions of the villas. Just a short stroll from the villas there is also a range of communal amenities including a tennis court, gym and restaurant.

We were shown to our two-bedroom abode which featured a huge open plan living and dining area with a full kitchen and well stocked fridge. The high ceilings exuded that essential Bali bungalow vibe and provided excellent ventilation to combat the tropical heat. The main bedroom boasted a stunning walk-through robe and outdoor bathroom, as well as direct views out to the pool. Each residence at Kelapa Villas is equipped with its own swimming pool for ultimate privacy and relaxation.

For our first morning at Kelapa Villas we made the most of their bike hire service and cycled through Lovers Lane, stopping to take a few snaps along the way. At the end of the path and directly across the road is a large coconut plantation you can ride through. The sunrise start was more than worth it to peddle through the palms surrounded by fluttering butterflies.

We worked up an appetite biking, so it was back to the villa for breakfast. Kelapa Villas offer a range of breakfast options that can be enjoyed at the restaurant or delivered to your door. We decided to dine by the pool, selecting a variety of fresh and healthy dishes. Our meals were served on massive palm leaves to set that perfect tropical vibe. The delicious smoothie bowls and avocado bagels were our top picks (with young coconuts to sip, of course).

As the afternoon rolled around, we hopped on our bikes once again and rode to the western side of the island to watch the sunset. Although Kelapa Villas is located inland for serenity, the ride to either side of the island is easy to navigate and only takes about 5 minutes. Cycling through the endless coconut plantations is an experience in itself and is worth a little sweat. Along the beach you can spot many swings set in the ocean that have become infamous photo ops on the island.

The next day we explored the eastern side of Gili T which boasts lively cafes and friendly locals. Horse-drawn carts, cyclists and pedestrians roam the busy main street all day long. We struck up a deal for a private snorkelling tour and spent a few hours spotting turtles and underwater statues off neighbouring Gili Meno island. After a long day adventuring, it was nice to return to our villa and enjoy the calmness of our quiet surroundings.

Staying in a villa is a must-do experience when visiting Gili Trawangan. For stunning surrounds, excellent service and spacious interiors, Kelapa Villas is the choice destination on the island. Book that plane ticket and see what the villa life’s all about!
